Can you have both NDIS and a home care package?

Generally no - you cannot receive both NDIS and a Home Care Package simultaneously. They are designed as alternative programs serving different populations.

Exceptions:

  • If needs are clearly separate (rare)
  • Transitional period when moving between programs

If you're eligible for NDIS, it's usually the better option due to higher funding and flexibility.

What happens to my NDIS when I turn 65?

If you're already on NDIS when you turn 65, you have a choice:

  • Stay on NDIS - Continue receiving your current supports. Most people choose this as NDIS typically provides more funding.
  • Transition to aged care - Move to Home Care Package or residential care. Once you leave NDIS, you cannot return.

Important: You cannot join NDIS for the first time after age 65. If you develop a disability after 65, you would access aged care services instead.

Is NDIS better than home care package?

NDIS is generally more generous, but "better" depends on your situation:

NDIS advantages:

  • Higher average funding
  • More flexibility in spending
  • No daily fee
  • Broader range of supports

Home Care Package may be better if:

  • You're over 65 and not on NDIS
  • Your needs are age-related, not disability-related
  • You don't meet NDIS disability criteria
How do I know if I qualify for NDIS or aged care?

You may qualify for NDIS if:

  • You're under 65 years old
  • You have a permanent disability
  • Your disability significantly affects daily life
  • You're an Australian resident

You may qualify for aged care if:

  • You're 65+ (or 50+ for Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander)
  • You need help to keep living at home
  • Your needs are primarily age-related

Tip: If you're under 65 with a disability, try NDIS first.

Can aged care recipients get NDIS funding?

Generally no. If you're already receiving aged care (HCP or residential), you typically cannot access NDIS.

Possible exception: If you acquired your disability before 65 and weren't previously assessed for NDIS, you may be able to apply. This is rare.

Recommendation: If you're under 65 and have a disability, always explore NDIS eligibility BEFORE applying for aged care services.
